Color Negative Film Processing

An in-person workshop with Adam Schachner

Wednesday, May 14: 6-9pm

Brief Description:

In this intermediate workshop, we’ll go through the ins and outs of Jobo film processors, mixing C41 chemistry, and processing color negative film. Basic B&W film processing knowledge is required to take this workshop. Each student should bring 1-2 rolls of exposed 35mm or 120 C41 film. 

Syllabus:

  1. Introductions and expectations

  2. Before entering the darkroom:

    1. -Discussion of C41 basics 

    2. -Differences of Jobo and Patterson reels and tanks

  3. Discuss Jobo sink setup and proper handling

  4. Mix Chemistry

  5. Load film

  6. Process

  7. Dry

  8. Discuss Troubleshooting


The Halide Project will supply all necessary chemistry and equipment.

Students are asked to bring color negative 35mm or 120 negatives for processing.

Instructor bio: 

Adam Schachner is an educator, printmaker, photographer, and Halide volunteer. Adam has over a decade of experience working in professional community darkrooms, digital labs, and artist residencies. Currently, Adam has been training his eye and lens on the architectural oddities of his own neighborhood in West Philly. During the day, you can find Adam at the University of Pennsylvania’s library where he works with rare books and manuscripts.
