Introduction to B&W Processing & Printing

Instructor: Patricia Anne Swanson

Sunday, October 30th
10 am - 6 pm
(lunch break from 1-2pm)

In this workshop we will be learning the fundamentals of B&W film processing and traditional darkroom printing. In the morning, we will cover how to mix chemistry, load film, and process a roll of film. In the afternoon, we will be covering how to use an enlarger, printing from a negative, basic contrast and exposure control, and print development workflow. Working in the darkroom is both a technical and artistic challenge, and this workshop will give you the opportunity to explore both as a part of your photographic practice.

For the morning, students will be asked to bring their own roll of 35mm or 120 B&W film. We recommend bringing an exposed roll of Ilford HP5+. We will not be covering color or sheet film.

For the print workshop, students are asked to provide their own paper. Resin coated (RC) paper is encouraged, but Patricia will demonstrate working with fiber paper for those who are interested.
