Expanding the Possibilities of Photograms
Instructor: Heather Palecek
Sunday, December 11
12 - 4 pm
Photograms are cameraless photographic artworks created with light and shadow in the darkroom. Often, they are the first project a student will create in an analog photography class to learn about photo materiality and how to use a darkroom. This playful and immersive workshop is for beginners and professionals alike. No prior knowledge is needed. Everyone will start by making a basic photogram and then learn four different techniques to expand the way in which you think about and approach the making of a photogram. Students will have studio time to experiment with these techniques and be given guidance and advice as needed. Heather will teach you through demonstration, slideshow, discussion, and then encourage you to play and experiment.
Students should bring in a variety of small objects of varying sizes and translucencies to work with. (Whatever interests you: natural items, a collection of yours, objects that have meaning to you, translucent print outs/digital negatives, etc.) Paper and chemistry will be provided by The Halide Project.
This workshop is generously sponsored by The Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation.
