SOLARGRAPHY WINTER WORKSHOP

Instructor: Jeff McConnell

TWO SESSIONS:
First session: Saturday, December 9, 2023 12 – 3pm
Second session: Saturday, January 20, 2024 12 – 3pm

With the sun is at its lowest in winter, and trees becoming bare of leaves, it’s a great time to plant solargraph cameras!

Solargraphs are long-exposure pinhole photographs that show not only the landscape, but light trails marking the passage of the sun. Familiar places look otherworldly, time is stretched, space transformed. Join us for a two-part workshop and experiment with this slowest version of pinhole photography!

The first meeting will include an overview of the process, and the making and loading of cameras. Students will take their cameras home and install them, retrieving them just before the second meeting, which will cover scanning and digital processing of the latent negatives.

The cameras supplied will be made using aluminum drink cans. Participants are welcome to bring other small containers to try, bearing in mind that if you want to put them outside, cameras should be weatherproof.

Artist Bio:
Jeff McConnell lives in the forests of New Jersey, and found alternative photography when there was no camera of a kind to make the pictures he imagined. He graduated from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2000, has been exploring photography without lenses ever since, and has shown work and given workshops in numerous countries.

This workshop is generously sponsored by The Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation.
